I am a PhD graduate student in the Computer Science & Engineering department at the University of Washington. My advisor is Zoran Popović . During my undergrad at Williams College I worked with Rónadh Cox.
I work on educational technology and computer science education. My current work focuses on creating games (such as Dragon Architect) and other educational systems, and exploring how best to design and use these tools. My research deals with questions of computer science pedagogy, game-based learning, curriculum development, and using computing to teach computational thinking skills.
My previous research focused on AI-assisted mixed-initiative game design tools. I explored ways to augment the human designer and allow them to work at the level of playspace properties (i.e., mechanical properties of gameplay) rather than raw level geometry.
While an undergrad at Williams College, I was part of a research project about numerical modeling of impacts on the surface of Jupiter's moon Europa.
I was the instructor for CSE 374: Intermediate Programming Concepts and Tools Winter 2016. In Winter 2014 I was the instructor for CSE 373: Data Structures and Algorithms.
I was a TA for CSE 333: Systems Programming in Autumn quarter 2011.
Summer 2011 and 2012 I was a TA at the Summer Science Program (SSP), an intensive, five-week residential program for advanced high school students. Of my own initiative I was responsible for most of the programming component of the program. I designed assignments, held review sessions and graded most of the programming homework. Since then I have been a consultant to SSP, creating the introductory programming lectures, and restructuring and rewriting the assignments.
Summer 2014 and 2015 I was the adjunct programming instructor for SSP and oversaw the programming curriculum at the New Mexico campus.
In the Spring 2011 semester at Williams College I was a TA for CSCI 107: Creating Games, a course for non-majors. I attended the lectures, held weekly TA hours, and designed and implemented solutions to the laboratory exercises.
