I am a graduating computer science PhD candidate at Paul G. Allen School, University of Washington, advised by Richard Anderson in the ICTD Lab. Within the broad spectrum of developing technology for low income countries, my interest includes data processing, data infrastructure, HCI and public health. My research focuses on understanding the challenges in processing data collected in low income countries and explore solutions that are tailored to mitigate various issues in the data pipeline.
Built an unsupervised algorithm to match location and patient names in low income countries where local language-based names are transliterated into English or French for digitizing data. Transliteration results in varying spellings and abbreviations, making it difficult to merge datasets.
Conducted a qualitative study to examine the data cleaning and processing challenges encountered by organizations operating in low income countries. This lead to building a taxonomy and identifying technical gaps in data processing. Publication # 1,6
Collected and analyzed data on SMS based fraud along with decompiling android based financial applications in developing countries for threat modeling. Publication # 2,3
Built an algorithm that forecasts the rise of Dengue patients in hospitals up to three weeks in advance using data on the call volume to public health hotline. Publication # 4 Press: GeekWire
Created visualizations on vaccine supply and refrigeration resources for better planning and maintenance when data is stale and have errors. Publication # 7,8
Built a module that generates outbreak warnings and alerts from dengue patient cases in Punjab, Pakistan. This resulted in a drop from 21000 cases in 2011 to 257 in 2012. Press: MIT Tech Review
Built a system that crawls Pakistan’s newspaper sites and evaluate disease-spread severity based on recent published articles. Publication # 9
Designed and built an algorithm to detect seasonal disease warnings and outbreaks using Goolge Flu Trend data. Publication # 10
Built a pipeline to process cloud usage logs and generate user specific usage statistics. Technologies: Go, Protocol Buffers, MapReduce
Redesigned search on data cleaning pipeline for better slicing of transformation data. Technologies: Java, C++, Protocol Buffers, MapReduce
Worked on developing a shared metadata cache in the data engine. Technologies: C++
Launched Pakistan's first and largest cellphone social network in Pakistan. Developed the backend and SMS delivery system.Technologies: Java, MySQL, PHP
