Overview
Historically, blind persons have not had the same access to information in
science, engineering, and mathematics materials. Modern technology, screen
readers, speech synthesis, automated Braille translation, and paperless
Braille devices have made access to textually information by blind persons
ubiquitous. However access to graphs, bar charts, diagrams, and other graphical images is much more limited. The purpose of this project is to automate as much as possible the process of creating tactile graphics from images.
This project is supported in by the University of Washington Royalty Research Fund, National Science Foundation, and Adobe.
