Departmental Guidelines on Summer Support
University guidelines allow faculty members with outside sources
of support to collect as much as 2.5 months of summer salary
without any special machinations. To collect the additional
one-half month, though, requires the concurrence of the Chair
and the Dean.
Department policy has been to deny this concurrence.
The reasons include:
- It's the University default.
- It's part of trying to maintain a "one-class faculty" to the
extent possible.
- It's just our lousy luck to work at a place that doesn't
provide paid vacations. The goal of funding agencies is to pay
for research. We all take some time off, teach some
short courses; etc.; auditability is a serious concern.
