The goal of the eScience Institute is to advance the techniques and technologies of data-intensive discovery, and to diffuse them across the campus. Technical foci of the eScience Institute include data management, data visualization, machine learning, cloud computing, and others. Our support has come from the University of Washington, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Washington Research Foundation, Schmidt Sciences, the National Science Foundation, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and others; in November 2013 UW, UC Berkeley, and NYU became partners in <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cs.washington.edu\/2013\/11\/12\/uw-berkeley-nyu-collaborate-on-37-8m-data-science-initiative\/\">a five-year, $37.8 million award from the Moore and Sloan Foundations<\/a> whose goal was to dramatically accelerate the growth of data-intensive discovery in a broad range of fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Data Architecture for the Ocean Observatories Initiative<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"241\" height=\"125\" src=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/OOI.banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21\" style=\"width:214px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>From 2012-20 I was an Adjunct Professor in the University of Washington&#8217;s world-renowned School of Oceanography. I have participated in various aspects of the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative, which deployed 1,000km of fiber optic cable equipped with chemical, physical, biological, and optical instrument on the seafloor on the Juan de Fuca plate with the goal of transforming aspects of oceanography from an expeditionary to an observatory science. My late friend Jim Gray was an active participant in the early stages of thiseffort. My Ph.D. student Keith Grochow built a novel visualization system that played a role in the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CloudBank: Managed Services to Simplify Cloud Access for Computer Science Research and Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"464\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/cb-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22\" style=\"width:297px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/cb-logo.jpg 464w, https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/cb-logo-300x78.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>From 2019-25 I was the University of Washington PI of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudbank.org\/\">CloudBank<\/a>, an NSF-funded initiative of UW, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego to establish a cloud access entity to help the computer science community access and use public clouds for research and education by delivering a set of managed services designed to simplify access. Driven by the profound potential of the public cloud and the associated complexity in using it, CloudBank serves as an integrated service provider to the research community through a comprehensive set of user-facing and business operations functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The West Big Data Innovation Hub<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"865\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/westhub-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23\" style=\"width:174px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/westhub-logo.jpg 865w, https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/westhub-logo-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/westhub-logo-768x455.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>From 2015-24 I was the University of Washington PI of the <a href=\"https:\/\/westbigdatahub.org\/\">West Big Data Innovation Hub<\/a>, an NSF-funded initiative of UW, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego whose mission was to build and strengthen partnerships across industry, academia, nonprofits, and government to address societal and scientific challenges, spur economic development, and foster a national big data ecosystem. Our projects, events, activities, and initiatives spanned priority thematic areas as well as cross-cutting areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Computing Community Consortium<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"447\" height=\"151\" src=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ccc_hz.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24\" style=\"width:298px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ccc_hz.png 447w, https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ccc_hz-300x101.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I served from 2007-13 as Founding Chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cra.org\/ccc\/\">Computing Community Consortium<\/a>, an NSF-funded organization whose objective is to catalyze and empower the computing research community to pursue audacious, high-impact research. In relation to this, I served as co-chair (with David E. Shaw) of the Working Group of the President&#8217;s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) to review the <a href=\"http:\/\/lazowska.cs.washington.edu\/nitrd\/\">Federal Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program<\/a>. I maintain a strong interest in the intersection of information technology and public policy, serving from 2020-26 as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/cosempup\/committee-on-science-engineering-medicine-and-public-policy\">National Academies Committee on Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Public Policy<\/a> (COSEMPUP) as a representative of the Council of the National Academy of Engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Computer Systems and Networking<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"443\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/7094.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112\" style=\"width:222px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/7094.jpg 443w, https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~lazowska\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/7094-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>For many years I participated in various activities of the Allen School&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.washington.edu\/research\/systems\">computer systems and networking research group<\/a>.
