Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 13:20:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Ernst To: "Getting a job" panelists Subject: "How I got my great job" panel Thank you for volunteering for the "How I got my great job" panel to be held Wednesday, June 3 at 5:00 in Sieg 422. The seminar will be broken into two parts. First, each of you will speak for about five minutes about some aspect of how to make one's job search a success. What did you do right, what should you have done differently, and what advice do you wish you had heard or heeded before starting the process? What was the biggest hurdle or the biggest surprise? Some potential topics to consider include timing (when to start, how to finish interviews before the first offer times out), sending the right number of letters (not too many, not too few, and to where), working the old boy/gal network, successful interviews (background research and preparation, the job talk, spinning your research, more), choosing among your offers, and negotiating salary/startup offers. Also feel free to add other topics that I haven't thought of -- I'm sure there are many. Don't fret over this too much, but do give it a bit of thought before we sit down for the seminar. Second, we'll take questions from the audience. They may want you to expand upon something they heard (or get the other panelists' opinions on something you said), or they may bring up other, related issues. Thanks again, and I'll see you on Wednesday. Please show up one or two minutes early, because otherwise my blood pressure gets really high. -Mike
