I had the thought of writing my will a while back. The reason was simple: I felt like I could die at any moment. It is perfectly possible that the plane I'm on could crash, a car could hit me, a deadly crime could happen to me, or some acute health conditions could be detrimental to me. Deep down I know these might be a little too extreme, but still, I cannot deny the possibility.
So I searched about how to write a will and found this wikihow article. I followed it through and wrote both in English and Chinese (not sure exactly why I did that, but I guess I wanted to make sure this could be recognized by as many as possible). The only thing tricky mentioned in the article is to "include information attesting to your soundness of mind". Ideally, one would find a lawyer to help, but that may not be a great idea for a broke grad student. Instead, I did what was recommended in the article: videotape myself while I write down the will. As of now, I have a hand-written will with the writing process recorded as a video. The will probably needs to be updated occasionally and I'll leave it to my future self.
If the time does come and you need to find my will, you can find it in my personal belongings. The video is stored on the cloud and on a device.
In any case, I wholeheartedly love and respect my parents. And if you believe I would feel grateful for having met you, then yes I would have felt that way. :-)
